Ijtihad (middle reason) is one important concept in Islamic law, on which sinhalese is based and its relevance in interpreting and applying Islamic principles. It refers to the process of analyzing and critiquing Islamic texts, traditions and contexts in order to derive legal rulings and guidance.
Spacification of Ijtihad :
- Dynamic interpretation (7-10 point): Ijtihad makes it possible to dynamically understand Islamic law by adapting to changing situations and contexts.
- Contextualization (7-10 point): Taking into account the social, cultural and historical contexts where Islamic principles are applied.
- Innovation & progress (7-10 point): By allowing Muslim scholars address new challenges & issues not explicitly reflected in traditional texts, ijtihaad does aid innovation & progress.
- Diversity of opinions (7-10 point): Acknowledging possibility of multiple valid interpretations thus promoting diversity in Islamic scholarship is one way Ijtihad is taken into account.
- Prevention from stagnation (7-10 point): The appeal for critical thinking through ijtihad leads to the prevention from stagnant and outdated Islamic jurisprudence.
- Empowerment for Muslim scholars (7-10 point): Qualified scholars taking an active role within interpretation/application of Islamic principles are given authorization by ijtihad.
- Accompanied by reform and renewal (7-10): The reform and renewal of Islamic thought enabled through this concepts makes it relevant hence applicable in contemporary world
