What are the rules for performing Ghusl (ritual purification)?

Ghusl (ritual purification) is a comprehensive washing required in Islam for certain situations to regain a state of ritual cleanliness. It is prescribed when someone has had major ritual impurity, such as after sexual activity, menstruation, or childbirth, and is necessary for performing acts of worship like prayer (Salah). Below are the basic rules for performing Ghusl:

Conditions for Ghusl:

Intention (Niyyah):

Ghusl must be performed with the intention of purifying oneself for the sake of Allah. This intention does not need to be spoken aloud, but it must be present in the heart.

Water:

Ghusl should be done with clean water. If water is unavailable or harmful (e.g., due to illness), alternatives like Tayammum (a dry purification) may be used.

Steps to Perform Ghusl:

Begin by Saying “Bismillah” (In the name of Allah):

This is recommended before starting the purification process.

Wash the Hands:

Wash both hands thoroughly up to the wrists three times.

Wash the Private Parts:

Cleanse the private parts to remove any impurities.

Perform Wudu (Ablution):

Perform the standard ablution (wudu), including washing the face, arms, wiping the head, and washing the feet. If you’re already in a state of wudu, you do not need to repeat the parts that are already clean, but the full wudu is preferred.

Wash the Head and Hair:

Pour water over the head three times, ensuring that the water reaches the roots of the hair. For someone with long hair, it’s sufficient to ensure the water reaches the roots of the hair. For short hair, just washing the scalp suffices.

Wash the Entire Body:

Begin by washing the right side of the body, ensuring that water reaches every part of the body, including the armpits, behind the ears, and between the toes.

Then, wash the left side of the body in the same manner.

This is typically done by pouring water over the body and ensuring that all skin is washed.

Ensure No Area is Left Dry:

It is important to ensure that water touches every part of the body, including areas like between the fingers and toes, the navel, behind the knees, and under the armpits.

Complete the Ghusl:

After the body has been thoroughly washed, the ghusl is complete. It is recommended

to dry off with a clean towel if desired.
