In Islamic thought, the concept of **Nafs** (self) has different interpretations, often categorized into three primary levels:

1. **Nafs al-Ammarah** (The Commanding Self): This is the lower self, inclined toward evil and base desires. It represents the unrefined, ego-driven aspects of a person.

2. **Nafs al-Lawwama** (The Self-Reproaching Self): This level is self-critical and aware of moral shortcomings. It struggles between the impulses of the lower self and the higher spiritual aspirations.

3. **Nafs al-Mutma’innah** (The Peaceful Self): The highest state of the self, where one attains inner peace and contentment through spiritual purification and closeness to God. It represents the soul at peace with its Creator.

These interpretations reflect the inner spiritual journey in Islam, where a person strives to overcome the lower self and achieve a state of tranquility and righteousness.
