In Islam, when a person converts (reverts) to Islam, all their past sins are forgiven, as per the words of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him):

“Islam wipes out whatever came before it.” (Sahih Muslim)

However, this does not absolve them of their responsibilities towards others whom they may have wronged. Islam emphasizes the importance of justice and reconciliation with others. Here’s what a new Muslim can do to seek forgiveness:
1. Repent to Allah

  • Sincere Repentance (Tawbah): They should sincerely repent to Allah for their actions, express remorse, resolve never to commit such acts again, and ask for His forgiveness.

2. Rectify Wrongs Against People

  • Seek Forgiveness from the Wronged: If possible and safe, they should approach the people they wronged, admit their mistakes, and sincerely ask for forgiveness.
  • Return Rights: If they have taken something unjustly (e.g., money or property), they should return it or make restitution.
  • Compensate for Harm: If direct contact isn’t feasible, they can compensate through other means, such as charity or acts of goodwill.

3. Pray for Those They Wronged

  • They can make dua (supplication) for those they wronged, asking Allah to forgive them and grant them goodness in this life and the Hereafter.

4. Do Good Deeds

  • Engaging in acts of kindness and charity can help in seeking Allah’s mercy. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Good deeds wipe out bad deeds.” (Quran 11:114)

5. Seek Guidance

  • They should consult knowledgeable individuals in the Muslim community or a trusted imam for advice on specific cases, especially if reaching out to the wronged individuals might cause further harm or complications.

The combination of repentance to Allah, seeking forgiveness from others, and doing good deeds strengthens their bond with Allah and demonstrates the sincerity of their conversion and repentance.
