1. Preparation for Friday Prayer

  • Early Arrival: Arrive at the mosque early. It is recommended to come early to listen to the khutbah (sermon) and perform additional voluntary prayers if time allows.
  • Purification: Ensure you are in a state of ritual purity (wudu). It is also encouraged to take a full shower (ghusl) before attending the Friday prayer, as the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) recommended.

2. Performing the Friday Prayer

  • The Khutbah (Sermon): The Friday prayer begins with the khutbah, which is delivered by the imam. There are usually two parts:
    • First Khutbah: The imam delivers the first part of the sermon, which includes praise of Allah, admonitions, and reminders about religious duties and ethics.
    • Second Khutbah: After a brief pause, the imam delivers the second khutbah, which is typically shorter and includes supplications and further reminders.
  • Listening Attentively: It is important to listen attentively to the khutbah and avoid talking or engaging in unnecessary activities during this time. The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said, “If you say to your companion, ‘Listen,’ on Friday while the imam is delivering the khutbah, you have indeed engaged in idle talk” (Hadith).

3. Performing the Salat al-Jumu’ah

  • Two Rak’ahs: The Friday prayer itself consists of two rak’ahs (units of prayer). The imam leads the congregation in these two rak’ahs after the khutbah.
  • Following the Imam: Join the congregation and follow the imam during the prayer. The imam will recite Surah Al-Fatiha and another surah in each rak’ah.
  • Concluding the Prayer: After completing the two rak’ahs, the congregation completes the prayer by performing the tasleem (salutation) and offering any additional personal supplications (dua) if desired.

4. Additional Recommendations

  • Supplications: The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) recommended making supplications and seeking forgiveness on Friday, as it is a day of blessings. There is a hadith that mentions, “On Friday, there is a moment when if a Muslim makes supplication to Allah, He will grant it to him” (Hadith).
  • Dress and Behavior: Dress in clean and modest clothing. The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) emphasized the importance of good grooming and cleanliness when attending the Friday prayer.
  • Additional Prayers: It is sunnah (recommended) to perform additional voluntary prayers, such as the Sunnah Muakkadah (emphasized Sunnah) before or after the Friday prayer
