To perform the Friday prayer, or Salat al-Jumu’ah, you can:
- Prepare: Arrive early at the mosque and ensure you are in a state of ritual purity (wudu).
- Begin: Start by making an intention to perform the prayer. Then, silently say “Allahu Akbar” and recite Surah Al-Fatiha and a portion of the Quran in two rakats.
- Listen to the sermon: After the two rakats, listen to the imam’s sermon, or khutbah.
- Join the main prayer: Follow the imam’s actions as he leads the congregation in the main prayer.
- Complete: After the prayer, recite the tashahhud (declaration of faith) and send blessings upon Prophet Muhammad.
Here are some other things to keep in mind:
- The imam should lead the prayer.
- Before and after the prayer, you can offer four rakats of Sunnat prayer.
- If you arrive late, you can complete your prayer individually after the imam has finished. If you miss the prayer completely, you can offer Zuhr prayer instead.
- In Shi’ite doctrine, it is recommended to raise your hands for supplication during the prayer.
- Praying together is meant to develop a feeling of unity among the Muslim community.
