In Islam, respecting and showing kindness to parents is considered a fundamental duty. The Qur’an and Hadith emphasize the importance of treating parents with the utmost respect and care. Here are some key guidelines on how a Muslim should behave towards their parents:

  1. Respect and Obedience: Muslims are encouraged to treat their parents with the highest respect and to obey them, as long as their requests do not conflict with Islamic teachings. The Qur’an says in Surah Al-Isra (17:23), “And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him. And that you be kind to parents. Whether one or both of them attain old age in your presence, say not to them a word of disrespect, nor shout at them, but address them a word of honor.”
  2. Kindness and Patience: Showing kindness and being patient with parents, especially when they are elderly or in need, is highly valued. This includes speaking to them gently, caring for their needs, and maintaining a positive attitude even in challenging situations.
  3. Gratitude: Expressing gratitude to parents for their sacrifices and efforts is important. The Qur’an emphasizes gratitude to both Allah and one’s parents, as seen in Surah Luqman (31:14), which mentions being grateful to Allah and one’s parents.
  4. Prayers for Parents: Muslims are encouraged to pray for their parents, asking Allah to grant them mercy, forgiveness, and well-being. The supplication in Surah Al-Isra (17:24) includes the prayer, “And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, ‘My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small.’”
  5. Maintaining Good Relations: Maintaining good relations with parents, even if there are disagreements, is essential. Islam teaches that one should avoid breaking ties with parents and should strive to resolve conflicts with kindness and understanding.
  6. Providing Support: Offering support to parents in their old age or during times of need is a key aspect of filial responsibility. This includes both emotional and practical support.

By following these guidelines, a Muslim demonstrates adherence to Islamic values and fulfills an important aspect of their faith.
