Islamic law, or Sharia, addresses environmental stewardship as an integral part of the broader ethical and moral responsibilities that individuals and communities have toward creation. This duty stems from the belief that humans are vicegerents (khalifah) of God on Earth, entrusted with the care and protection of the environment. Although classical Islamic texts may not have directly addressed modern issues like climate change, the principles derived from the Qur’an, Hadith (sayings and actions of the Prophet Muhammad), and Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh) provide a framework for dealing with environmental challenges today.
